Support for students who speak English as a Second Language
Students at Corinda State School come from a diverse range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In fact 36% of the students speak a language other than English at home with 30 different language groups represented. Our school offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) program to students from non-English speaking backgrounds who meet the criteria outlined by Education Queensland. This program is coordinated by a specialist ESL Teacher who is based at the school. Support is currently provided by both the ESL teacher and four teacher aides. The level of support provided is determined following assessment of a student’s reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in English.
Students are supported in one or more of the following ways:
The program aims to assist students develop their English literacy and language proficiency skills, as well as assist students with mainstream class activities. Priority is given to students in most need depending on their language skills and level of schooling. ESL students who do not receive support are monitored by the ESL teacher who liaises with the class teacher on a regular basis. Each case is reviewed throughout the year to ensure that students receive support appropriate to their needs.
Students receiving ESL support are given a report twice a year with their school report. Parents wishing to discuss their students ESL requirements are invited to make an appointment with the ESL teacher through the school office. |
