“Onward with Honour”
Corinda State School offers the opportunity for all children to participate in a rich and varied learning environment catering for individual needs. Students are able to engage in a wide range of curricula and community activities which promote positive learning experiences, values and the teaching of respect.
The school provides for a safe, supportive, healthy and socially just environment from Preparatory Class to Year 7.
Literacy and numeracy skills are the focus in Years 1-3 through an uninterrupted two hour morning session. Students, during the day, have the opportunity to engage in other curriculum areas where they begin to explore the world past and present.
Students in Years 4-7 continue to develop their literacy and numeracy skills with diverse opportunities for application and critical evaluation of that knowledge provided. They access many real-life experiences both in the school and community. These students also enjoy access to the Instrumental Music program, Choir, LOTE(French), Interschool Sports, Opti-Minds, Student Council, Rotary program, Peer Mediator Program, Super Challenge and more. A two-year cycle of integrated units is planned and taught in year levels with each classroom providing a range of learning opportunities for the integration of knowledge and learning. An integral part of this is access to technologies.
The Parents’ & Citizens’ Association is a strong advocate for the rights and needs of our students, providing many opportunities to fund-raise and support the school financially as well as adding their perspective on policy development. In 2006 they contributed to strategic decision making through the Triennial School Review. They provide guidance and perspective around pertinent issues playing a vital role across the whole school.
The Student Council maintains a significant role within the school. They operate using formal meeting procedures which support democratic decision making processes. They also fund-raise for local, state, national and international charities while providing the classmates with fun activities, such as discos and free dress days.
The staff of Corinda State School is extremely dedicated. They are in one mind advocating on behalf of the students in order to provide the best opportunities for each child to learn and achieve to the best of their ability. The school has a broad diversity of clientele. Staff successfully cater for students in the areas of: English as a Second Language; Refugees; Students with Disabilities; learning difficulties; speech language support; indigenous students; and gifted & talented students. Staff and parents respect each other and together support the learning of the children, through volunteer helpers, class parent liaison contacts and committee members.
The facilities are well maintained and include a new Performing Arts Centre, three Preparatory Classrooms, a resource centre, ESL centre, Learning Support centre, an air-conditioned computer laboratory, classroom blocks and an extensive oval with playgrounds.
Finally I would like to congratulate the teachers, (specifically Mr Harrop, Mrs Moore and a visiting administrator, Mrs Clayton), involved in the construction of the new school website. Now we all have the opportunity to contribute to the web pages and as you will discover, there are many areas in which we excel and some areas in which we continue to develop. Most importantly, however, you will learn that we are continually offering opportunities for students to move ‘onwards’ and always ‘with honour’.
