Instrumental Music

"The Arts are an integral part of every child's education at Corinda State School, with a particular focus on music. Music education brings many benefits, contributing to childrens' development intellectually, emotionally and socially. Music is an activity which can be a lifelong learning experience."

The Music team comprises:

  • Sarah Hollingworth - Classroom Music teacher. Conducts classroom music program and assisted by other teaching staff, directs choir and recorder ensembles.
  • Karen Newham - Brass, Woodwind & Percussion teacher. Karen is also a Brisbane CAE graduate and is an accomplished clarinettist and pianist. Karen directs the Senior and Junior Concert Bands.
  • Melody Lentz - Strings.
  • Rod Iffinger - Program Manager. Rod is the Deputy Principal of the school and a graduate of the Australian Army School of Music, Brisbane CAE and QUT with studies in trumpet, french horn and recorder. Rod maintains an active role in the music program, supporting the work of the teachers and ensembles.

All students from year 1 attend general music classes where they develop basic musical skills and gain an appreciation of music.

In year 2, students with an interest in learning a string instrument are tested for suitability and if successful commence lessons in year 3.

Instrumental Music is a part of the Core Curriculum for all year 5 students. Students who are not already learning a string instrument must study a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument for the full year. As they progress to year 6 & 7 students who have made suitable progress are encouraged to continue in the program.

Please Note: Some conditions apply to the Instrumental Music Program.

  • The Year 5 Program is FREE! (almost) - An instrument and tuition is provided at no cost. Basic consumables such as valve oil, slide / cork grease and reeds are to be purchased by the students.
  • School instruments are usually available for the first year only! Parents of continuing students need to buy or rent instruments. Students playing the more expensive instruments eg french horn, bass, tuba, tenor saxophone etc may hire a school instrument at a nominal cost (to offset wear and tear). Most of the major music retailers offer rental or time payment on instruments as well as heavy discounts for up front purchases.
  • With the exception of year 5 other instrumental students pay a small annual fee which covers the cost of music, photocopying and incidental expenses of the program.
  • Students learning an instrument in the Instrumental Music Program are required to participate in a school band or ensemble.

Extra Curricular Offerings: In addition to the Bands and String Ensembles students are also encouraged to belong to the Corinda Choristers vocal ensemble and the Recorder Ensembles (Beginner and Advanced).
